Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is optional (follow trail to painted rock for nude section)
The Good
- Beautiful bush-meets-beach setting: Smalleys Beach offers a pristine natural environment with rainforest-style canopy, sandy shoreline, and peaceful ocean views. Campsites are right on the beach, giving a true nature immersion.
- Secluded nude area available: A short walk along the beach past the painted rock leads to the unofficial nude stretch, offering privacy, clean sand, and lots of seashells. The beach is generally quiet, making it suitable for naturist relaxation.
- Spacious and private campsites: With only 11 sites available, each one large and separated, this is an excellent place for peaceful camping. Many have direct beach access and ocean views.
- Wildlife experience: Regular sightings of scrub turkeys, lizards, and kangaroos. Sunrise beach walks occasionally include kangaroos or wallabies feeding when the tide is out.
- Quiet and scenic sunrise and sunset: The beach faces north, allowing sunset views. Sunrise walks are recommended for tranquil nature time. The clear water and sheltered location create a calm environment, especially in southerly winds.
- Well-maintained basic facilities: There are toilets and drinking water on-site, and campsites are usually kept clean. Visitors describe the environment as peaceful when considerate campers are present.
The Bad
- Noise and rule enforcement issues: Some visitors reported large groups camping for extended periods, with loud music day and night, and no ranger presence to enforce quiet hours. Generators (prohibited) were used by some campers, disturbing others.
- Sandflies and mosquitoes: Insect presence can be intense, especially at dawn and dusk. Strong insect repellent is essential.
- Not ideal for swimming: The beach is scenic but shallow, with large tidal changes. No stinger net is available, making summer swimming unsafe.
- Limited facilities beyond basics: No food services or shops nearby. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient and avoid leaving rubbish, as scrub turkeys will spread it.
- Early morning parking disturbance: Some visitors find that people arriving and slamming car doors can disrupt the peace very early in the morning.
- Ranger presence minimal: Regulations (noise, generator use, camping limits) are not regularly monitored, leading to occasional inconsiderate behavior.
The Naked Truth
Smalleys Beach is one of those rare places where naturism still feels genuinely tied to nature rather than tourism. It’s raw, quiet, and deeply immersive; rainforest shade behind you, open sea in front, and campsites so close to the sand that the beach becomes part of daily life. If you follow the trail past the painted rock, nudity isn’t just tolerated; it’s understood and expected, with plenty of space to relax without being watched.
That said, this isn’t a polished or managed naturist destination in Australia. The experience depends heavily on who else is camping. When fellow campers are respectful, it’s magical; when they’re not, noise and generator use can seriously break the spell.
Insider Tip
Book ahead if camoubg. Bring strong insect repellent, water, and all supplies as there are no food options. Sunset here with a glass of wine is a highlight; just clean up well and store food securely to avoid animals.
