The Good
- Scenic city escape: Perched above Fort Amherst and across the harbour from Signal Hill, Soldiers Pond offers postcard-worthy views right inside St. John’s.
- Easy trail access: Located directly on the East Coast Trail network, the route is short but rewarding, making it accessible for most hikers.
- Refreshing swim spot: The pond’s calm water and natural ledge along the dam make it suitable for a cooling dip on warm days.
- Hidden-in-plain-sight: Despite being minutes from downtown, the spot feels secluded, often drawing locals seeking quiet or sunbathing space.
- Local quirk: A brief naturist moment made headlines when a “nude beach” sign appeared here; later removed - but informal skinny-dipping still happens occasionally among hikers.
The Bad
- Steep climb: The short hike up from Fort Amherst is steep and uneven; sturdy shoes are recommended.
- Limited sitting space: Rocky terrain and a concrete dam mean flat areas are minimal, bring a towel or mat if you plan to linger.
- No facilities: There are no restrooms, lifeguards, or garbage bins. Pack in and pack out.
- Water hazards: Some submerged metal debris and shallow areas near the edge make it unsafe for diving.
- Not officially clothing-optional: While nude swimmers have been seen here, it is not sanctioned, and discretion is advised.
The Naked Truth
Soldiers Pond is one of St. John’s small urban secrets - a tranquil swimming hole high above the Atlantic, with sweeping views of Signal Hill and the harbour. It’s not an official nude spot, but its tucked-away setting occasionally attracts adventurous bathers or locals taking a spontaneous dip.
The pond’s appeal lies in its simplicity: a short, rugged climb leads to clear water, open sky, and silence broken only by seabirds and waves below. It’s an ideal quick-escape hike for those who love nature close to the city, whether clothed or not.
This swimming hole in St. John's isn't the most well know naturist spot in Atlantic Canada but is a solid option for a nude dip on a hot day!
Insider Tip
Visit early morning or at sunset for the best light and solitude. The rocks can get slick after rain - use caution crossing the dam.
