The Good

  • Crystal-clear Ionian waters: Spiaggia della Commenda, on the Campomarino di Maruggio coast, is known for its turquoise sea and fine golden sand that glows under the Puglian sun. On calm days, the water is transparent enough to see fish swimming near the shore.
  • Peaceful yet accessible: Located just outside the main town, the beach offers a relaxed atmosphere; far less crowded than the big Salento resorts. The free beach sections near the Onda Verde residence and the dunes are especially serene.
  • Scenic and authentic: Dunes, Mediterranean vegetation, and the low, rustic architecture of Puglia form a picture-perfect backdrop. You’ll also find local eateries serving seafood, orecchiette with mussels, and panzerotti; everything that makes southern Italy naturist beaches unforgettable.
  • Comfort with options: There are both free sections and managed lidos offering umbrellas and gazebos for rent. Families and groups appreciate the mix, especially the dog-friendly area near Fuori Rotta beach club.
  • Perfect for long stays: Many visitors fall in love with the slow rhythm here, calm mornings, clear water, and evening walks through the marina lined with lights and music.

The Bad

  • Parking fines and double standards: Tourists frequently report parking enforcement being strict; €40 tickets are common for even minor delays. Be extra careful where you park.
  • Limited public beach space: The free sections have been increasingly reduced due to private concessions, leaving visitors packed close together during peak August weekends.
  • Waste management issues: Some visitors mention trash build-up, especially after mid-August when the crowds rise. Maintenance can lag behind the season’s influx.
  • Overpriced for what it offers: In high season, umbrellas can cost €60–80 per day, and restaurant bills may come with surprise surcharges.
  • Few shaded spots and basic services: Bring your own umbrella and water; some areas have no lifeguard or clear signage.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Spiaggia della Commenda is one of those naturist Italy beaches that perfectly captures the real Puglia; dazzling sea, golden dunes, and a mix of charm and chaos. It’s not luxurious, but it’s undeniably beautiful. While the beach scene has become more commercial, the natural beauty remains intact. You’ll find stretches that still feel wild, especially toward the dunes, but come prepared for some imperfections: wind, crowding, and uneven upkeep.

Despite its flaws, regulars return year after year for the same reason that blinding blue sea and the slow, sun-drenched rhythm of southern Italy.

Insider Tip

Park in official lots even if they’re a bit farther, fines are steep. Head east toward the dunes early in the morning for quieter spots and clearer water. Bring your own shade and food if you want to avoid high prices at the lidos.
