The Good
- Spectacular scenery: Spiaggia dell’Arenauta, also known as “La Spiaggia delle 300 Scale” (The 300 Steps Beach), is one of Gaeta’s most striking coastal spots. Stretching about 2 km, it lies between dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and lush Mediterranean vegetation.
- Peaceful and natural: Once you reach the shore, the atmosphere is calm and intimate. The beach’s isolation and limited access keep crowds away, making it ideal for those seeking quiet sunbathing or a more naturist experience.
- Soft golden sand and clear waters: The fine sand and clean, calm sea in this naturist beach in Italy make this a pleasant spot for swimming. Early mornings and evenings are particularly beautiful as the sun hits the cliffs and sea caves.
- Cultural setting: Located near historic Gaeta, visitors can combine a beach day with exploring landmarks such as the Aragonese Castle and the Montagna Spaccata Sanctuary.
The Bad
- Challenging access: The beach is reachable only by descending over 300 steep, uneven steps carved into the hillside and, of course, climbing them back up. This makes it unsuitable for children, the elderly, or anyone with mobility issues.
- Poor organization and confusing pricing: Multiple visitors report inconsistent entry fees, unclear package deals, and rude service at some private beach clubs. Prices agreed upon in the parking lot are sometimes not honored below, and receipts are rarely provided.
- Limited amenities: No reliable water source or refreshment stalls on the sand itself. Showers and toilets are up near the top of the staircase, requiring a tiring climb to reach.
- Overpriced and poorly managed concessions: A few private lidos operate here, but reviews cite deceptive promotions, poor communication, and dismissive staff attitudes.
- Hot, strenuous return climb: The long ascent in midday sun can be exhausting, so bring plenty of water and plan your timing carefully.
The Naked Truth
Spiaggia dell’Arenauta is stunning; wild cliffs, golden sand, and crystal water make it one of Lazio’s most photogenic beaches. But it’s not for everyone. The steep descent, minimal facilities, and inconsistent management can turn a peaceful day into a test of patience.
For naturists, however, it remains one of central Italy’s most famous unofficial nude beaches, particularly at the southern end past the last lido. Those who come prepared with water, shade, and good shoes; will find a truly secluded coastal experience unmatched by the busier resorts nearby.
Insider Tip
Arrive early to secure a shaded spot and avoid the midday climb. Bring your own umbrella, food, and plenty of water. If you plan to visit the naturist area, head south along the beach where signage or boundaries may be minimal but regulars are discreet and respectful.
Who's Here
Couples, naturists, and locals seeking peace and sea views away from the tourist bustle of Gaeta.
Beach Surface
Soft golden sand with occasional rocks near the cliff base; shallow, clear entry to the sea.
Access Difficulty
Hard: steep 300-step descent through the hillside; not suitable for everyone.
