The Good
- Official naturist beach: Spiaggia di San Saba became an officially recognised Italian naturist beach in 2022, marking it as one of Sicily’s few legal spots for nude recreation. This gives it a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the sea without disturbance.
- Peaceful and scenic: This naturist beach stretches about 300 meters, framed by golden sand dunes and the Tyrrhenian’s clear turquoise water. It’s quiet and intimate, with spectacular sunsets over the sea that draw both locals and travelers.
- Accessible escape from Messina: Just 25 km from the city, San Saba offers an easy retreat into nature - far enough to feel remote, yet close enough for a half-day trip. Its simplicity and natural surroundings make it a great break from the urban coast.
- Relaxed naturist vibe: Visitors describe a calm, tolerant environment where nudity is optional but common. The mood is friendly and low-key, with respectful regulars who value privacy and quiet.
The Bad
- No amenities: There are no toilets, showers, or food stands. You’ll need to bring water, shade, and all essentials for the day.
- Unpaved access: The short dirt road leading to the beach can be rough, and the walk through sand dunes may be difficult for those with mobility issues.
- Adult crowd: The naturist section, especially behind the dunes, is mostly frequented by men, with occasional couples. Some reports mention discreet adult behavior in secluded areas, so families may prefer the clothed section closer to the entrance.
- Limited shade: Apart from small dune vegetation, there’s little natural cover, bring an umbrella or tent.
The Naked Truth
Naturist Beach San Saba is a rare find on Sicily’s north coast; a wild, legal nude beach with a genuine sense of freedom. The golden dunes, crystal waters, and lack of commercialization make it perfect for naturists seeking authenticity and peace. It’s not designed for convenience, but for simplicity and connection to nature.
The LGBTQ+ friendly and open-minded crowd adds to the inclusive atmosphere, while its limited infrastructure ensures it remains quiet and unspoiled. If you value serenity over service, San Saba delivers one of the island’s most tranquil coastal experiences.
Insider Tip
Visit early in the day to avoid midday heat and secure parking. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and a beach mat for comfort. The best swimming area is near the center, where the seabed is sandy and the water calmest.
