The Good

  • Beautiful and spacious: Spiaggia Libera di Capalbio is a long, open stretch of coastline on the Tuscan shore, known for its coarse golden sand and clear blue sea. The wide layout gives everyone plenty of space, even during summer months; making it ideal for peaceful walks and relaxation. It's one of the best naturist beaches in Italy.
  • Free yet organized: Despite being a free beach, it’s impressively organized. Wooden poles mark spots for umbrellas, creating order without crowding. You can bring your own setup or rent sunbeds and parasols from the nearby kiosk at the “Penultimate Beach.”
  • Facilities nearby: There’s a bar-restaurant right on the beach serving fresh seafood and drinks, plus toilets, showers, and changing cabins, rare conveniences for a free beach.
  • Clean water and calm atmosphere: The sea is often calm and transparent, with shallow entry points perfect for wading. Visitors describe the crowd as polite and quiet, with none of the noise and chaos typical of more tourist-heavy areas.
  • Perfect off-season escape: Visiting in late spring or early autumn means nearly empty shores, perfect weather, and a serene environment ideal for reading, sunbathing, or long barefoot walks.

The Bad

  • Occasional litter: After storms, plastic and debris sometimes wash ashore, and the local authorities are not always quick to clean it. It’s more noticeable in less-frequented corners of the beach.
  • Ferrous sand: Some visitors dislike the dark, iron-rich sand which can feel heavy and retain heat.
  • Limited shade: There are no natural trees or canopies, so bringing an umbrella is a must.
  • Parking distance: The parking area is small and located about 500 meters away, which may be inconvenient when carrying gear.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Spiaggia Libera di Capalbio is one of Tuscany’s most naturally charming and balanced beaches, vast, clean, and respectful of its surroundings. It has the rare ability to combine freedom and comfort, offering the simplicity of a free beach with the amenities of an organized one.

While not officially naturist, some sections further from the main bar are quietly clothing-optional, especially outside peak season. Whether for a tranquil day by the sea, an evening aperitif, or a relaxed swim, Capalbio delivers a sense of calm rarely found on Italy’s more crowded coasts.

Insider Tip

Arrive early or visit in May or September to enjoy the wide-open beach almost entirely to yourself. Bring water shoes for walking the darker, coarse sand comfortably.

Getting There

Spiaggia Libera di Capalbio lies near Chiarone Scalo, in southern Tuscany, just after the Capalbio stopover on the Tyrrhenian coast.

By Car: Drive along the Aurelia (SS1) and exit at Chiarone. From there, follow the local road toward the sea - there are both free and paid parking areas roughly 500 meters from the beach.

Once parked, follow the signs for “Ultima Spiaggia” (Last Beach) - Spiaggia Libera is just beyond, marked by its wide open space and the small kiosk with bar and self-service restaurant.

By Train: Take the regional train to Capalbio or Chiarone Station, then continue by foot or taxi to the beach entrance (about 2 km).
