The Good
- Wild and cinematic: Spiaggia Naturista di Monti Russu, near Aglientu in northern Sardinia, is a pristine stretch of sand framed by rugged granite rocks, Mediterranean scrub, and endless sea views. It’s part of a protected nature reserve, giving it a raw, untouched atmosphere.
- Crystal-clear waters: The beach’s turquoise shallows and rocky edges are ideal for snorkeling, visitors often spot octopuses and schools of fish.
- Scenic walks: The 15 - 20-minute path to the beach winds through aromatic shrubs and low hills, offering panoramic views all the way to Corsica on clear days. For hikers, nearby trails lead to smaller coves and elevated viewpoints perfect for sunset.
- Peace and space: Even in summer, the beach rarely feels packed thanks to its size and multiple sandy inlets. Off-season, it’s nearly deserted; ideal for naturists or those craving silence.
The Bad
- Steep and sandy access: The downhill walk to the beach is easy going but tiring on the return, especially under the sun. Sand can get hot and slippery, sturdy shoes are best.
- No shade or services: There are no kiosks, lifeguards, or rentals. Bring your own umbrella, snacks, and plenty of water.
- Occasional wind and insects: The area is exposed, and strong winds or midges can appear in the late afternoon.
- Path confusion: Some trails are unmarked, and it’s easy to take the wrong turn from the parking area.
The Naked Truth
Monti Russu is a wild, soul-soothing corner of Sardinia where nature still calls the shots. It's also one of the best naturist beaches in Italy. Its sweeping sands, soft dunes, and granite outcrops invite slow afternoons of swimming, sunbathing, and wandering. The naturist area isn’t official but is quietly accepted toward the quieter coves, where privacy comes easily.
It’s not for those seeking bars or convenience; this beach rewards those willing to walk a little, carry their own provisions, and embrace the simplicity of nature. As the sun drops, the rocks glow red, and it’s clear why locals call it “one of Sardinia’s last wild paradises.”
Insider Tip
Arrive before 10 a.m. for easier parking and cooler hiking conditions. Bring reef shoes and an umbrella, shade is scarce. Visit outside August for a calmer, more authentic experience.
