The Good
- Secluded and scenic: Spiaggia Romana sits quietly on the Tyrrhenian coast near Bacoli, surrounded by dunes, pine forest, and the slopes of Mount Cuma. The approach through a shaded woodland gives it a remote, almost ancient atmosphere. From the sand, you can see both the islands offshore and, inland, the mythic site of the Sibyl’s Cave.
- Wide and calm shore: The beach runs for about 6 km, with shallow entry into the sea, making it manageable for families and older visitors. Even in summer, parts of the coastline remain uncrowded.
- Untouched charm: Apart from a few cafés and simple bars nearby, this naturist beach in Italy remains mostly natural - no loud resorts, no rows of umbrellas - just open sand and sea.
- Easy to reach: Located only 17 km from Naples, it’s accessible by car in under an hour, and private parking is conveniently close to the entrance.
The Bad
- Serious cleanliness issues: Many reviews mention scattered trash, glass shards, syringes, and even stray dogs. In off-season months the beach can resemble a dumping ground rather than a maintained coastal area.
- Neglected infrastructure: No lifeguards, toilets, or bins, and some sections show signs of erosion and unregulated horse training.
- Occasional pollution: Water quality fluctuates, with nearby outflow pipes affecting clarity after rain. Locals advise against swimming during rough seas or just after storms.
- Private encroachments: Several decaying beach clubs and informal car parks block parts of the public access.
The Naked Truth
Spiaggia Romana is a beach of contradictions, majestic in geography yet scarred by neglect. Its expanse of sand and historical backdrop could make it one of Campania’s coastal jewels, but persistent litter and lack of care keep it from living up to its potential. Still, for travelers seeking solitude, sea air, and a glimpse of nature unfiltered (and sometimes unkempt), it offers a quiet, haunting kind of beauty.
Visit during peak season when maintenance briefly improves, and keep expectations realistic: this is more wild coastline than curated resort.
