Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity optional - longstanding naturist area (southern end)
The Good
- Dog-friendly and spacious: Stretching nearly 2 km long, St Leonards Beach is one of the North Shore’s most relaxed beaches for dog owners. At low tide, the sand flats open wide.
- Naturist tradition with respect: The southern cove has long been used as a clothing-optional zone beach, it's a welcoming and low-key atmosphere.
- Scenic coastal beauty: High white-to-gold cliffs, scattered rockpools, and a curving shoreline make this one of the most photogenic city beaches in Auckland. The North Shore Coastal Walk (Te Araroa Trail) runs past it, offering breathtaking views north toward Takapuna and south to Cheltenham.
- Peaceful atmosphere: Hidden beneath the Devonport Peninsula cliffs, the beach feels worlds away from urban noise. It’s quiet even on summer days when Takapuna and Cheltenham are busy.
- Walkable connections: At low tide you can stroll north to Takapuna or south to Cheltenham Beach.
The Bad
- Steep access: A set of long stairs at the end of St Leonards Road is the main way down. Fine going in, but the ascent can feel like a workout on the way back.
- Tide-dependent space: At high tide the usable sand area shrinks dramatically; plan your visit for mid- to low tide to enjoy the full stretch of beach.
- Limited facilities: No toilets, showers, bins, or food vendors, bring your own supplies and carry out your rubbish.
- Not officially designated as a nude beach: Nudity is tolerated but not formally recognized by Auckland Council. Remain respectful of others and keep cover-ups handy near access points.
The Naked Truth
Once known primarily as a naturist retreat, St Leonards Beach has evolved into a blend of locals, dog walkers, families, and quiet nudists - all sharing a mutual respect for its tranquillity. It remains one of the few places in urban Auckland where you can sunbathe freely, walk your dog, and feel completely removed from city life within minutes of downtown. With its dramatic cliffs, expansive views, and secluded feel, it’s a true hidden gem on the North Shore.
Insider Tip
The southern section is the clothing-optional zone; keep a modest buffer from the stairs and families.
Who's Here
Dog owners, locals on walks from Takapuna or Devonport, and a handful of naturists who’ve visited for decades. Even on busy days, it’s rarely crowded and the vibe is relaxed
Beach Surface
Fine sand with rock pools and small stones near the cliffs. High cliffs provide wind shelter and dramatic backdrops for photography.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: the staircase descent is steep but well maintained. No wheelchair access. Wear good footwear and avoid heavy rain when the steps can be slippery.

Getting There
From Takapuna or Devonport, take Lake Road, turn onto St Leonards Road (opposite Takapuna Grammar School), and park at the end. The staircase down to the beach begins there.
During low tide you can also walk in along the shore from Narrow Neck or Takapuna Beach. The beach sits along the North Shore Coastal Walk (Te Araroa), so it’s easy to combine with a longer scenic hike.
Public Transportation: From Wairau Valley, ride bus no. 871 and hop off in Eversleigh Road. From there, walk for about 10 minutes to reach St Leonards Bay.
