The Good
- Legally designated nude beach: Stinky Beach is officially recognised for clothing-optional use, removing uncertainty for naturists. This beach is a well known South Australian naturist beach.
- Spectacular natural setting: Framed by jagged limestone cliffs and reefs, the bay feels dramatic, wild, and visually striking.
- Powder-white sand: The sand is soft, bright, and clean underfoot, making it comfortable for long stays.
- Calmer water than open coast: Offshore reefs reduce wave strength, creating more manageable swimming conditions on calm days.
- Very quiet in low season: Outside school holidays and summer peaks, the beach can feel completely empty and peaceful.
- Excellent for nature lovers: Wildlife sightings are common, including seabirds and nearby seal colonies.
- One of South Australia’s most beautiful beaches: Despite the nickname, many consider it among the best beaches in the state.
The Bad
- Access limitations: Most direct access routes pass through paid accommodation areas, which can be confusing or restrictive for day visitors.
- Privacy issues in peak season: During summer, cars frequently drive past slowly, with reports of people staring, filming, or photographing beachgoers.
- Drone activity reported: Visitors have noted drones flying overhead, which seriously affects comfort and safety.
- No facilities whatsoever: There are no toilets, bins, showers, or water points.
- Rough approach roads: Corrugated dirt roads can be challenging without a sturdy vehicle.
- Limited signage: First-time visitors often struggle to confirm they are in the correct location.
- Not family-friendly: Remote access, nudity, and lack of supervision make it unsuitable for children.
The Naked Truth
Stinky Beach is absolutely stunning; wild limestone headlands, soft white sand, and a protected bay that feels almost Mediterranean in color. In quiet months, it delivers the kind of peaceful, respectful naturist experience people hope for: space, silence, and freedom without judgment demonstrates why it has long been considered one of South Australia’s finest nude beaches.
However, during peak summer the experience can change completely. Repeated drive-bys, phone filming, and even drones have made many visitors uncomfortable, despite nudity being fully legal here. The beach itself is not the problem — human behavior is. If you come during low season or on quiet weekdays, Stinky Beach can feel magical; in January, it may feel exposed rather than liberating.
Insider Tip
Visit outside school holidays and avoid January if privacy matters to you. Early mornings and weekdays in March–May or September–November offer the best naturist experience.
Who's Here
Mostly experienced naturists, photographers, solo travelers, and couples. Numbers increase significantly in summer, though not always for the right reasons.
Beach Surface
Soft white sand backed by limestone cliffs and rocky reef sections. The seabed is generally sandy with scattered rock patches.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: Reachable by car, but roads are rough and signage is minimal. No formal walking paths or facilities.

By Car: From Kingston SE or Robe, drive toward Nora Creina via local coastal roads. Expect long gravel sections that can be corrugated. Free parking is available near the beach entrance, but spaces are limited. Some accommodation roads charge access fees, which can cause confusion - look for public roadside access rather than private resort driveways.

By Public Transport: There is no public transport to Stinky Beach. A private vehicle is essential.
