OPTIONAL

Clothing optional (well-known naturist beach)

The Good

  • Sheltered turquoise lagoon: Ten Mile Lagoon is protected by an offshore reef, creating calm, shallow, crystal-clear water that feels more like a natural swimming pool than open ocean.
  • Official clothing-optional stretch: This is Esperance’s recognised naturist beach, with a long-established reputation and a relaxed, respectful atmosphere. It is one of the most well known naturist beaches in Western Australia.
  • Extraordinary natural beauty: Brilliant white sand, electric-blue water, and untouched coastline make this one of the most visually striking beaches in Western Australia.
  • Very quiet and uncrowded: Even in peak season, the beach often feels empty thanks to its size and remote access.
  • Excellent swimming and floating: The lagoon remains shallow for a long distance, making nude swimming comfortable and easy on calm days.

The Bad

  • No facilities at all: There are no toilets, bins, showers, food, or drinking water; come fully prepared.
  • Long stair access: Both entry points require descending long wooden staircases from the cliffs.
  • Very limited shade: There are no trees or shelters anywhere on the beach. An umbrella is essential.
  • Wind exposure: Strong coastal winds can make conditions uncomfortable on some days.
  • Parking fills quickly: Spaces are limited, especially on hot summer days.
  • Snakes reported in dunes: Care is needed when walking through vegetation and around rocks.
  • Plastic wash-up after storms: Some days see debris along the tide line, depending on conditions.
  • Poor signage: The clothing-optional area is not clearly marked, which can cause confusion for first-time visitors.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Ten Mile Lagoon is one of the most naturally suited nude beaches in Australia. The sheltered lagoon, shallow water, and soft sand make swimming and sunbathing comfortable without clothing, especially when the wind drops. Nudity is common but never forced, and the atmosphere is peaceful rather than social or party-oriented.

The clothing-optional section runs for roughly one kilometre, beginning about 200 metres west of the Ten Mile Lagoon car park. Most visitors spread out widely, and it’s very easy to find complete privacy. While technically unofficial, naturism here has been practiced for decades and is widely understood by locals. Many people remain nude both in and out of the water, especially further from the stairs.

Insider Tip

If Ten Mile Lagoon is windy, try accessing the naturist section from Eleven Mile Lagoon instead. The short rock crossing is manageable, and the lagoon there is often calmer and more protected from the wind.

Who's Here

Naturists, couples, solo travelers, photographers, swimmers, and quiet beach lovers. Very mixed ages, minimal cruising culture, and generally respectful behavior.

Beach Surface

Extremely fine white sand with shallow, sandy entry into the lagoon. Reef protection keeps waves small near shore. The ocean side beyond the reef can be rough.

Access Difficulty

Moderate: Access requires a long staircase descent and walking on soft sand. Not suitable for mobility issues.
