The Good
- Beloved inland nude spot: The Ledges is widely considered Vermont’s favorite skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing area and the most popular non-coastal nude beach in US at New England..
- Friendly, social atmosphere: Compared to other nude sites in Vermont, this area attracts a more balanced crowd, including women and families. Weekends are social and lively, while weekdays are often quiet and peaceful.
- Beautiful granite ledges: Flat rock outcroppings make for great sunbathing, with opportunities for swimming, floating, and jumping into the cold, clear reservoir water.
- Rope swing fun: A long-standing favorite for both kids and adults, adding a playful element to the experience.
- Easy trails and scenic setting: Wide, well-worn trails lead down to the water, passing through a calm wooded area that feels relaxed and welcoming.
The Bad
- Hard rock surfaces: The granite ledges are beautiful but not comfortable. A thick towel or mat is essential.
- Water level changes: Because the reservoir is managed by hydroelectric operations, water levels can rise or fall quickly. The small sandy beach is sometimes completely underwater.
- Parking pressure on weekends: Parking can be challenging during summer weekends when crowds reach 100 to 150 people.
- Limited cell service: Signal is very poor. Do not rely on maps, texts, or internet access once you arrive.
- Not accessible: Roots, uneven terrain, and narrow paths make this unsuitable for strollers or those with mobility limitations.
The Naked Truth
The Ledges is about as genuine and normalized as inland naturism gets in the U.S. This isn’t a hidden or edgy nude spot; it’s a long-established local place where nudity feels routine, social, and unremarkable once you’re past the signs. People talk, swim, sunbathe, bring kids, jump off rocks, and stay for hours. On summer weekends it can feel almost like a nude community picnic, while weekdays are calm, quiet, and almost meditative.
At the same time, it’s not a comfort beach. You’re lying on hard granite, the water is cold, parking can be stressful, and nature very much sets the rules. Water levels change, cell service disappears, and nothing is curated for you. If you come expecting amenities or soft lounging, you’ll be uncomfortable. If you come understanding that this is a raw, social, Vermont-style skinny-dip spot rooted in trust and tradition, it’s one of the most welcoming clothing-optional places you’ll find.
Insider Tip
Do not undress until you pass the posted signs beyond the picnic area. Once you see the warning sign about nude sunbathers, you are in the correct place. Bring water, sunscreen, and a towel thick enough for rock lounging.
Who's Here
A mix of locals, longtime nudists, families, couples, and solo visitors. The crowd is friendly and respectful, with a roughly 2:1 male-to-female ratio. Weekends are social; weekdays are often nearly empty.
Beach Surface
Primarily granite rock ledges with a small sandy strip that appears only when water levels are low. Expect cold freshwater, rocky entry points, and occasional algae depending on conditions.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: The walk is not long, but it includes roots, uneven ground, and a half-mile approach from parking. Manageable for most people wearing good shoes.

Getting There
The Ledges Nude Beach is located along Harriman Reservoir near Wilmington, Vermont, just north of Ward’s Beach.
By Car: From Vermont Route 100, turn onto Boyd Hill Road, then continue onto Ward’s Beach Access Road. Follow the road downhill until you reach the Ward’s Beach and Boat Launch area. This is the correct destination even though you will not see signs for “The Ledges.” Parking is limited and fills quickly on summer weekends.
By Foot: From the parking area, walk down the access road and turn right toward the water. Follow the trail with the reservoir on your left. Stay on the clearer, easier path where the trail splits. You’ll cross a small footbridge and continue along the shoreline. After passing an old stone structure and a clearly posted sign warning of nude sunbathers, you’re in the correct area and may undress. Continue along the shore to reach the main granite ledges and social zones.
By Public Transport: There is no public transportation to The Ledges. Access requires a car followed by a walk, and due to poor cell service, it’s best to download directions before you go.
