The Good
- Beautifully secluded coastline: The Oaks feels wild and untouched, with long stretches of sand, dramatic cliffs, and uninterrupted ocean views.
- Quiet even on sunny days: Many visitors report having the entire beach to themselves, especially outside peak summer weekends.
- Scenic walk-in experience: The gravel path through coastal bushland, filled with birds like fairywrens, makes the approach feel peaceful and immersive.
- Soft sand and powerful ocean views: This is classic Bass Coast scenery; wide horizon, rolling waves, and a strong sense of space.
- Rock pools and exploration areas: At low tide, the rock shelves and pools are excellent for exploring and photography.
- Established nudist section: A small, informal clothing-optional area has existed here for years and is generally respected by regular visitors.
- Outstanding sunsets: Late afternoon light across the cliffs and water is genuinely breathtaking.
The Bad
- Steep access stairs: The long staircase down to the beach is demanding, and the climb back up requires reasonable fitness.
- No facilities at all: No toilets, no water, no shade, no bins; you must bring everything and take everything out.
- Not a safe swimming beach: Strong waves, rips, and changing conditions make swimming risky on many days.
- Wildlife hazards: Bluebottles are common at times, and seals have been spotted near rock caves, caution is essential.
- No dogs allowed: This beach is within a protected area, and dogs are strictly prohibited.
- Little natural shelter: There are no trees or cliffs providing shade once on the sand.
- Advanced coastal walking only: The rock walk toward Inverloch is for experienced hikers only and not suitable for casual exploration.
The Naked Truth
The Oaks is not a comfort beach; it’s a nature beach. The effort required to reach the sand filters out crowds, leaving behind a raw, quiet stretch of coastline that feels deeply Australian. When conditions align, it can feel almost spiritual: wind, waves, birds overhead, and nothing but open ocean in front of you.
The unofficial nudist section is small but long-established and generally calm, with friendly regulars and a respectful atmosphere. It is a well known nude beach in Victoria. That said, this is not a social or party nude beach. It’s best suited to people who value solitude, scenery, and freedom over amenities and convenience.
Insider Tip
If you’re visiting for the clothing-optional area, walk well away from the stairs before settling in. Early mornings and late afternoons are the quietest, and always check tides before exploring rock pools or caves. If you’re visiting for the clothing-optional area, walk well away from the stairs before settling in. Who's Here
Locals, hikers, surfers, photographers, solo beachgoers, occasional naturists, and nature lovers. The nudist section tends to be small and discreet, with a mostly mature crowd.
Beach Surface
Soft sand mixed with rock shelves and pools. Sections become narrow at high tide. Expect bluebottles at times and strong shore breaks.
Access Difficulty
Moderate to difficult: Easy to reach by car, but the long stair descent and climb back up require good mobility and fitness.
