The Good

  • Quiet location: Compared to nearby Wreck Beach, this beach is laidback and sleepy. Busy weekend party vibes and drum circles don't normally occur on Tower Beach.
  • Pebbles: Not much sand here. It is mostly pebbles and rocks which makes it easy to cleanup after a day on the beach.
  • Walkable: From nearby Acadia Beach (and parking lot) it is a relatively easy 20 minute walk along the shoreline.
  • Officially official: Nudity is expected here and it is an officially designated clothing optional beach. Signage ensures there are no surprises for everyone else.

The Bad

  • Shaded till later: Beach of the cliff angles you won't get sun here until about 12pm (or later) during summer
  • No vendors: There are no food options as the beach is much quieter than Wreck Beach.
  • Sharp rocks: The walk into the water isn't easy without sand and water shoes are recommended
  • Lots of stairs: Like Wreck Beach, there are a lot of stairs to navigate.. which unfortunately seem neverending on the way back up.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Tower Beach is the quieter little sibling of Vancouver’s famous Wreck Beach.

When Wreck gets busy, Tower is a great alternative. It offers more privacy, fewer people, no vendors, and a more low-key atmosphere. The beach is pebbly rather than sandy, and because of its position below the cliffs, it gets direct sunlight later in the day.

Still, if you’re looking for a relaxed place to strip off, unwind, and enjoy the Vancouver sunshine, Tower Beach is a peaceful local option.

Insider Tip

In the off season people have beach fires late in the day down here. With the pebbles it makes it easy to build a small firepit.
Do not attempt unless fires are allowed and especially not during summer.

Who's Here

Singles, couples and families of all ages. There are no 'party vibes' here, so it is mostly people who prefer a quier nude beach experience.

Beach Surface

Mostly pebbles and rocks with some sand

Access Difficulty

Medium - the 400 or so stairs are hard work but it is quick to navigate

Tower Beach is the quieter, more introverted sibling of Wreck Beach - and we mean that in the best possible way.

We visited in the morning, not realising that the sun doesn’t really reach the rocks until around midday. Oops. Until then it was cold, shaded, and definitely more “why did we do this?” than “perfect nude beach day.” For the first couple of hours, the main traffic was joggers passing along the shoreline and the occasional kayak gliding by, which made it feel more like a scenic stop-off than a proper beach hang.

But once the sun finally came over the cliffs, Tower completely changed. The rocks warmed up, the water started sparkling, and suddenly it made sense. It became a very peaceful, low-key place to strip off and relax without the crowds, vendors, music, or general Wreck Beach circus happening nearby.

Tower is not soft and sandy like Wreck. It is pebbles, rocks, logs, and more rocks. Bring a proper beach mat unless you want your bum to slowly lose feeling throughout the afternoon. Water shoes or sandals are also a good idea because getting in and out of the ocean is not exactly graceful.

The crowd was mostly couples keeping to themselves, with a few solo regulars spread out along the beach. It felt very respectful and very chill - much more private than Wreck, but still relaxed enough that you don’t feel awkward being nude. For first-timers who want a quieter nude beach experience and don’t need the social scene, Tower might actually feel easier than Wreck.

For some reason, the water also seemed cleaner here. Maybe it was the rocks, the lower foot traffic, or the lack of vendors and crowds, but it felt a little fresher and clearer than what we usually notice at Wreck. We even saw sea lions offshore, which instantly made the morning chill and stair struggle feel worth it.

There are no vendors, no beach beers being yelled out, no Boozy Freezies, and no burgers waiting for you at the bottom. So bring everything you need: water, food, sunscreen, something comfortable to sit on, and enough energy for the climb back up.

Tower Beach is not better than Wreck - it is just completely different. Wreck is the famous, sandy, chaotic, beautiful Vancouver nude beach experience. Tower is the quiet alternative when you want privacy, space, cleaner-feeling water, and a slower day by the ocean.

Just don’t arrive too early expecting full sun. And seriously, save some energy for the stairs. They are still brutal.

Getting There

Tower Beach is located below the UBC campus, near NW Marine Drive and the Museum of Anthropology. It feels tucked away, but it is still fairly easy to reach if you know where to go.

By car:
The easiest option is to park around the UBC campus, then walk toward the Tower Beach / Trail 3 access point near NW Marine Drive.

From there, it’s a forested stairway down to the beach. The walk is beautiful, but there are a lot of stairs, so pack light and remember you’ll need to climb back up at the end.

By public transport:
Take transit to UBC, then walk across campus toward NW Marine Drive and Trail 3. It’s a good option if you don’t want to deal with parking around campus.

There are no vendors or major facilities down at the beach, so bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and anything else you need for the day. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, so sandals or water shoes are a good idea.
