The Good
- Wild and free atmosphere: UFO Beach is one of Texas’s most unique coastal stretches, offering a sense of total freedom along the Gulf. The long expanse of white, soft sand and clear blue water creates a beautiful, natural setting that feels far from civilization.
- Uncrowded beyond the first few miles: After driving north past the busy family zones near Access #6, the beach becomes quiet and spacious, giving visitors plenty of room to relax, picnic, or sunbathe in peace.
- Famous landmark: The beach takes its name from a washed-up emergency pod shaped like a UFO. Over the years, visitors have painted it with bright graffiti and messages like “Nude Beach” and “No Tan Lines,” making it a quirky symbol of the area.
- Open space for naturists: Although unofficial, UFO Beach is widely known as the most popular naturist beach in Texas, besides Hippie Hollow which is a lake near Austin. Many regulars and day-trippers enjoy it as a laid-back naturist retreat.
- Good for adventure seekers: Perfect for those who like off-roading, birdwatching, or camping in remote areas by the sea.
The Bad
- No facilities at all: There are no restrooms, showers, food vendors, or shade - you’ll need to bring everything yourself and pack it out when you leave.
- 4x4 required: Beyond the first few miles, the sand becomes deep and soft. Regular vehicles often get stuck, especially after rain.
- Can be rowdy: During spring break and weekends, the beach attracts partygoers with loud music and drinking. Those seeking peace should visit on weekdays or off-season.
- Unofficial nudity: Public nudity isn’t legally permitted in Texas. While tolerated here, visitors should cover up when beach patrol passes.
The Naked Truth
UFO Beach is Texas’s most famous naturst beach, not officially sanctioned, but long accepted by locals and visitors. It’s remote, raw, and wide open to the Gulf, where you can swim, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the freedom of the coast. The atmosphere depends on the season: relaxed and calm on weekdays, social and loud during spring break. The beach’s name comes from the UFO-like escape pod that washed ashore years ago, now a local landmark and gathering point for naturists. While the area feels welcoming, discretion is essential since enforcement varies.
