OPTIONALClothing optional south of the DOC campground
The Good
- Endless white-sand coastline: Uretiti Beach stretches for kilometres along Bream Bay, offering soft powdery sand, dunes, and a spacious shoreline that rarely feels crowded.
- Naturist-friendly section: South of the DOC campground lies one of New Zealand’s best-known clothing-optional beaches, long recognised by naturists for its privacy and relaxed acceptance.
- DOC campsite by the dunes: The Department of Conservation (DOC) maintains a large, open campsite directly behind the beach - simple, affordable, and perfect for surf-side camping.
- Unspoiled natural scenery: Beautiful sea views, shifting dunes, and clear water make it a classic Northland spot for photography, sunrise walks, and surf fishing.
- Good for swimming and surfing: Flat sandy bottom and consistent waves make it popular for swimmers and surfers alike, though currents can be strong.
- Nearby adventures: Just a short drive from Waipu’s shops and caves, adding variety to a weekend trip.
The Bad
- Mixed experiences at the campsite: While many campers love the relaxed atmosphere, others report noise, late-night parties, or poor management during peak holiday periods.
- Unregulated beach driving: The beach doubles as a legal driving route; large 4WDs often cruise at speed, posing a hazard for walkers and night fishers.
- Sparse shade and facilities: Bring your own shelter, food, and water; amenities are basic and rustic.
- Rips and strong surf: Great for surfing but swimmers should be cautious the waves can be deceptive.
- Occasional visitor conflict: Some guests misunderstand the naturist section’s boundaries; discretion and mutual respect are key.
The Naked Truth
Uretiti Beach is both wild and welcoming - a long, shimmering stretch of sand backed by dunes and bush, with room for everyone to carve out their own space. The southern section offers one of New Zealand’s best unofficial nude beaches: friendly, unpoliced, and spacious enough to feel free without bothering anyone else, making it a perfect spot as another New Zealand naturist area.
The nearby DOC campsite gives direct dune access and that pure “sleep-by-the-sea” experience, though it can swing from tranquil to rowdy depending on the crowd. Whether clothed or unclothed, Uretiti captures the spirit of untamed Northland - open, raw, and unforgettable.
Insider Tip
Head south from the campground for more solitude and the clothing-optional stretch - about a 10 to 15 minute walk past the main beach entrance. Avoid weekends if you want quiet. Bring shade, plenty of water, and check tide conditions before driving or swimming.
Who's Here
Families camping for the weekend, fishermen, surfers, and a respectful naturist community sharing the southern stretch of beach.
Beach Surface
Soft white sand, backed by high dunes with long, straight surf breaks. Vehicles often leave tracks closer to the waterline.
Access Difficulty
Easy - sealed road to the DOC site; short walk over dunes to the beach.
