The Good

  • Peaceful, unspoiled atmosphere: Vault Beach feels remote and calm, even during summer and bank holidays, thanks to its walk-in access.
  • Large, scenic bay: The beach stretches wide with beautiful views across the water and dramatic Cornish cliffs.
  • Naturist-friendly area: A well-known naturist section exists at one end, offering extra space and often fewer crowds.
  • Great swimming and water clarity: Calm conditions can make for excellent swims across the bay.
  • Dog-friendly environment: Dogs are generally welcome, making it popular with walkers and pet owners.
  • Coastal path connections: You can combine the visit with scenic walks to or from Gorran Haven for cafés and facilities.

The Bad

  • Steep access walk: The descent from the car park is manageable but can feel tough on the return uphill, especially after a full beach day.
  • Fine shingle surface: The beach is mostly small pebbles rather than sand, which can be uncomfortable without footwear.
  • No facilities whatsoever: No toilets, food, or lifeguards; you must bring everything you need.
  • Narrow access roads: Driving to the cliff-top car park involves tight single-track lanes that can be stressful for some drivers.
  • Slippery after rain: Paths can become muddy and uneven in wet conditions, requiring good shoes.
  • Naturist presence may surprise some visitors: Those unfamiliar with clothing-optional beaches may feel caught off guard if they wander to the far end.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Vault Beach has a long-standing clothing-optional section at one end, typically used by naturists during warmer months. Nudity is not the norm across the entire beach, and most visitors remain clothed, but the naturist area is well known and generally respected. The atmosphere tends to be discreet and relaxed rather than overtly social, so even non-nudist visitors rarely feel uncomfortable.

Because the beach is large, it’s easy to choose your own comfort level. Families and walkers usually stay toward the main access area, while naturists head farther along the shoreline. This natural separation works well and helps maintain a calm, respectful environment that suits a wide range of visitors. Vault Beach is a top choice for a naturist beach in the UK.
