The Good
- Wide, sandy stretch: Vecāķi–Kalngale offers a long, flat beach perfect for sunbathing, strolling, or playing. It’s a great escape from the city without going far.
- Easy access from Riga: Just 20–25 minutes by train from Riga Central Station to Vecāķi, plus a short walk. There are also bus options. It’s convenient for both locals and travelers.
- Naturist area nearby: A designated nude beach is located around 1 km north in Kalngale. It’s easy to reach on foot from Vecāķi or directly by train to Kalngale station, followed by a short walk.
- Facilities and cafés: Toilets, shelters for changing, and various cafés line the path between the station and the beach, making it easy to grab snacks or drinks.
- Natural setting: The surrounding pine forest gives the beach a fresh, breezy atmosphere and a sense of being away from the city despite its proximity.
The Bad
- Windy conditions: The beach is often very windy, making it hard to sit comfortably without shelter. Kite surfers love it, but beachgoers may find it chilly.
- Limited toilets during busy times: While there are facilities, they can be few compared to peak summer crowds.
- Theft concerns: Some visitors have experienced car break-ins at the paid parking lots. It’s wise not to leave valuables inside.
- Basic infrastructure: Compared to Jurmala, Vecāķi has fewer restaurants, shops, and beach amenities. It’s more low-key and natural.
- Cold weather outside summer: Off-season visits can be quite chilly, especially with the strong winds off the Gulf of Riga.
The Naked Truth
Vecāķi Nude Beach (often written as Vecaki nude beach in English) is a popular summer escape near Riga, with a wide, sandy coastline that feels more natural and less built-up than Jūrmala. You’ll still find enough cafés and basic facilities for a comfortable day trip, but the atmosphere stays low-key. The naturist / clothing-optional section at Kalngale is well known among locals and visitors who prefer a simple, relaxed nude beach without heavy commercialization. The main downside is the wind off the Baltic, so it’s worth checking the weather forecast before you go.
Insider Tip
Bring a windbreaker or light jacket, even in summer. If you plan to visit the naturist area, walk north along the beach or take the train to Kalngale for quicker access.
Who's Here
A mix of families, locals escaping the city, naturists, and occasional tourists. It’s busiest on warm summer days and public holidays.
Beach Surface
Fine, soft sand with a very gradual slope into the water, making it good for swimming and wading.
Access Difficulty
Easy: well connected by train, bus, and car. The walk from Vecāķi station is about 10 minutes.
