The Good
- Large island layout: Werdinsel offers multiple zones including clothed, mixed, and naturist areas. This makes it flexible and easy to find a space that suits your comfort level.
- Easy river access: The Limmat runs alongside the island, with calm entry points and areas where you can drift gently with the current. It adds a dynamic swimming experience compared to still lakes.
- Accessible from the city: Despite feeling green and open, it is very easy to reach from Zürich. It is one of the few places where you can combine city access with a naturist option.
- Spacious grassy meadows: The upper sections provide large open lawns for sunbathing. Even when busy, you can sometimes find quieter pockets away from the main flow.
- Facilities and food nearby: With a restaurant, kiosk, and public amenities close by, it is easy to spend a full day without needing to leave the area.
- Mixed social atmosphere: The blend of naturist and clothed visitors creates a more relaxed and open environment where people can move freely between zones.
The Bad
- Summer overcrowding: During warm months, the island can become extremely packed, especially in popular sections. It can lose its sense of calm quickly.
- Unwanted attention: In the naturist areas, some visitors may feel observed when arriving on quieter days.
- Dog rule issues: Although dogs are meant to be on a leash during certain months, not all owners follow this, which can be frustrating.
- Less secluded naturist zone: Compared to more hidden spots, the FKK area here is part of a busy public island, so it does not feel completely private.
The Naked Truth
Werdinsel is one of the best known places in Zurich for nude sunbathing, but it feels more like a big city recreation area than a traditional nude beach.
There are large grassy areas, plenty of trees and easy access to the river, with swimmers, walkers and sunbathers all using the island throughout the day. The naturist section is part of that wider space, so it doesn’t feel especially hidden or cut off from everyone else.
That means it can be very relaxed when it’s quiet, but much busier and more social on warm days. Expect people passing nearby and a more urban atmosphere than you’d get at a secluded lake or beach.
The river is great for cooling off, and there’s plenty of space to spread out on the grass. If you’re comfortable with a popular, mixed-use naturist spot rather than somewhere private, Werdinsel is one of the easiest places to strip off around Zürich.
It’s a great nude beach in Switzerland and well worth checking out if you’re in the city.
Insider Tip
For a more relaxed visit, head to the upper meadow areas or come earlier in the day before peak crowds arrive. Bring a towel for the grass, and be aware of the river current if you plan to float. If you prefer fewer people, weekdays are a better option than sunny weekends.

Getting There
Werdinsel Island FKK is located along the Limmat River in Zürich, Switzerland, near the Höngg district.
By car or on foot: Drive toward the Höngg area and park in nearby designated spaces, then walk onto the island via pedestrian paths. It is also easily reachable by bike or on foot from surrounding neighborhoods.
By public transport: Take a tram or bus toward Zürich Höngg, then walk a short distance to reach the island. The area is well connected, making it one of the easiest naturist-friendly spots to access in the city.
